Fred M. Fine papers, 1944-1993.

Correspondence, primarily 1944-1961; files on Chicago cultural affairs containing memos, reports, leaflets, newsclippings, etc., primarily 1970s and 1980s; sound recordings of reminiscences (21 cassettes) by Fred M. Fine; and photocopies of Fine's FBI files. Topics of the collection include Fine's work as a Chicago labor organizer in the garment and steel industries in the 1930s, Communist Party U.S.A. spokesman in the 1940s and 1950s, Chicago's first Commissioner of Cultural Affairs (1984-1987), and Public Affairs Officer at Columbia College; activities sponsored by the Illinois Arts Council; and numerous Chicago festivals and cultural organizations. Correspondents include Fine's wife and others. Sound recordings focus on Fine's Communist activities and 1956 arrest under the Smith Act.
